Following the 2024 election and Donald Trump’s return to the White House, a growing number of Democrats favor a more moderate direction for their party, while most Republicans prefer to maintain their current ideology, according to Gallup. Support for a centrist Democratic Party has risen to 45%, an 11-point increase since 2021, while calls for a more liberal stance have declined.
Among Republicans, 43% want the party to remain ideologically unchanged, up from 2021, while those advocating for a more conservative approach have dropped to 28%. Despite record-high ideological polarization, moderate Democrats are the most likely to support party moderation, whereas conservative Republicans are split between keeping the status quo and shifting further right.
As Trump enacts his conservative agenda with full GOP congressional control, Republicans express greater satisfaction with their party’s stance. Democrats, reacting to their 2024 losses, appear to be reevaluating their approach ahead of the 2026 elections.
