In 18 months, New York State’s work zone speed cameras have issued 130,000 violations, according to state officials. The program aims to improve safety for highway workers after two deaths and a severe injury last year on the Thruway.
Violators face escalating fines: $50 for the first offense, $75 for the second, and $100 for further violations within 18 months. The initiative, funded by fines, generated $300,000 for safety gear in the past year. Many drivers were caught speeding 20-30 mph over the limit.
Officials hope the program will lead to safer driving and fewer violations. Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed making it permanent in the state budget.
