Yates County weighs public transit options at next meeting

Yates County legislators will hear a presentation from Yates Transit Service on Monday regarding expanded public transportation.

Yates Transit Service, which operates eight limited-schedule routes, has served the county since 2017 without relying on taxpayer funding. The service also supports Mozaic, a provider for individuals with disabilities.

Regional Transit Service presented its proposal last month, offering longer 12-hour daily routes, dial-a-ride services, and new tech features like e-tickets and bus tracking.

However, RTS would require a 0.25% mortgage recording tax to help fund operations, raising concerns about potential financial burdens on the county.

A decision is expected by March.
