The Artworks Gallery is currently featuring a collection of ten watercolor portraits by member artist Abby Gazley, displayed in the Honored Artist Space through March. The pieces, created during the covid pandemic, blend still life arrangements with the artist’s own image, reflecting both creative resilience and the emotional toll of isolation.
Gazley initially struggled with her creative focus, facing the challenge of filling large watercolor sheets amid pandemic uncertainty. She shifted her approach, incorporating intimate still life sketches alongside self-portraits. The resulting works capture a unique interplay between personal reflection and the beauty of ordinary objects.
Bev Lombardo, a fellow artist and close friend of Gazley, praised the collection. “Many of these beautiful watercolor pieces show the frustration and isolation that shows in her face and mirror many of our feelings during that covid time. They also emphasize the beauty of everyday objects that she places in the foreground,” Lombardo said.
Visitors can explore Gazley’s works during the gallery’s winter hours: Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. As the gallery is volunteer-run, those planning a visit are encouraged to call 315-257-0201 in advance to confirm staffing.
