El Salvador offers to take U.S. deportees under unprecedented deal

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has offered to accept deportees from the U.S., including violent criminals, under a historic migration agreement, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Monday.

Bukele proposed outsourcing part of the U.S. prison system to his country for a fee, sparking legal and human rights concerns.

Rubio also witnessed a U.S.-funded deportation flight in Panama, part of efforts to deter illegal migration.

His trip, amid a U.S. foreign aid freeze, also included a nuclear cooperation deal with El Salvador and warnings to Panama on Chinese influence over the Panama Canal.
