Geneva residents are voicing concerns following reports of ICE agents in the area over the weekend.
Local leaders confirmed that federal agents were targeting specific individuals but emphasized that many in the community, including legal immigrants and asylum seekers, are now fearful of leaving their homes.
Last night the Geneva Police Department reported that they are unaware of any ICE investigations in the city. “There has been a lot of reports of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in Geneva,” a brief statement read. “The Geneva Police Department has not been made aware of any ICE investigations in the city, nor have we been requested to assist ICE in any way.”
According to community reports, Hernandez Mexican Store has seen its traffic drop off by upwards of 90%.
Local officials and organizations, such as the New York Immigration Coalition, are urging immigrants to understand their rights amidst rising anxiety in the Hispanic community.
