TUESDAY HS BASKETBALL REPORT: Wayne boys outlast Lyons to remain unbeaten; Gananda boys edge East Rochester

Tuesday night featured 13 Wayne-Finger Lakes high school basketball games, with a couple of thrilling matchups.

The game of the night took place in Ontario, where the Wayne boys outlasted Lyons to remain unbeaten at 11-0. Elsewhere, the Gananda boys pulled off an upset, handing East Rochester just their second loss of the season. On the girls’ side, Newark put up a fight but fell to a very good Eastridge team, while Marcus Whitman improved to 9-1 with a blowout victory.

The Eagles spent much of the first half playing catch-up but went into halftime with a three-point lead, thanks to Aidan Twist’s buzzer-beater. In the second half, they outscored the Lions 38-30. Despite Wayne’s Cam Blankenberg fouling out with 2:43 left and Lyons narrowing the gap to seven with 2:26 to play, the Eagles pulled away to secure their ninth double-digit victory.

With the Panthers holding a three-point lead and just 17.9 seconds left on the clock, the Bombers called a timeout to draw up a play. However, Noah Wollschleger’s inbound pass went straight to Owen Switzer, who was fouled and sank both free throws to seal the win. East Rochester has lost two of their last three games since starting the season 7-0.
