LA wildfires leave 24 dead as winds complicate containment

Wildfires in Los Angeles have killed 24 people, destroyed over 12,000 structures, and displaced 150,000 residents.

Firefighters, aided by crews from nine states and Mexico, are racing to contain the Palisades and Eaton fires before dangerous Santa Ana winds return midweek. Containment efforts are at 11% and 27%, respectively.

Evacuation orders remain in effect as officials search for 16 missing people and investigate looting incidents.

Governor Gavin Newsom has fast-tracked rebuilding efforts while estimating damages could reach $150 billion, potentially the costliest disaster in U.S. history. Aid is pouring in, but rebuilding will pose challenges for affected communities.
