California has implemented a one-year moratorium on insurance cancellations and non-renewals for homeowners affected by the Palisades and Eaton fires.
Announced by Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, the ban, effective January 7, protects residents in impacted areas and adjoining ZIP codes, even if they did not suffer direct losses.
The Department of Insurance is hosting workshops to assist survivors with claims and policy questions. Commissioner Lara has urged insurers to extend premium grace periods and suspend pending cancellations.
The fires have burned over 29,000 acres, caused 11 deaths, and resulted in estimated economic losses up to $150 billion, with insurers potentially facing $20 billion in claims.
