DeWitt post office manager indicted for stealing over $81K in stamps

A federal indictment has been filed against Emilio Chirico, 56, the station manager of the DeWitt Post Office, accusing him of stealing $81,553.94 worth of stamps and falsifying postal records to cover up the theft.

The charges, announced by U.S. Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Matthew Modafferi of the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General (USPS-OIG), allege that Chirico committed wire fraud, misappropriation of postal funds, and submitted false entries and reports between January 2021 and March 2023.

Chirico, who has served as the station manager since March 2012, faces serious consequences if convicted. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 30 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $1 million, and up to five years of supervised release.

The sentencing would ultimately depend on federal statutes, U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, and other judicial considerations.

The investigation was conducted by the USPS-OIG, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Tamara B. Thomson and Michael F. Perry prosecuting the case.

As with all federal indictments, the charges remain allegations, and Chirico is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
