Midlakes’ girls varsity wrestling team achieved a milestone victory at the Hunter-Leone Tournament this past weekend, securing the championship title with a dominant performance.
Competing at Penfield High School, the Screaming Eagles took first place in team scoring, racking up 154.5 points. The win marks another step forward for a program experiencing rapid growth and success in the burgeoning world of girls’ wrestling.
Three Midlakes wrestlers captured individual titles in their weight classes. Sophomore Abbigail Hargarther pinned her opponent to win the 114-pound class, while eighth-grader Julionna Carrasquel took home the 132-pound title, also by pinfall. Fellow eighth-grader Lizzy Boughton sealed the third championship at 145 pounds with another pinfall victory.
The team’s depth was on full display as multiple wrestlers contributed to the overall victory. Senior Leah Peck earned second place at 132 pounds, while sophomore Suelyan Serrano Rosa claimed third at 126 pounds. Junior Clara Bond also placed third in the 145-pound category. Additional fourth-place finishes came from sophomores Olivia Thorpe (120 lbs) and Kenzie Turner (126 lbs), along with freshman Miley Smith (152 lbs).

The win underscores the rapid rise of the Midlakes girls wrestling program, which has gained momentum since its formation. Earlier this year, on January 23, the team hosted its first all-female dual meet against Fulton High School, a recognized powerhouse in girls’ wrestling.
This season marks a significant evolution for the Midlakes squad, which now competes independently from the boys’ program. The team has focused on all-female dual meets and tournaments, providing the athletes with increased opportunities to compete at a high level.
The excitement continues to build as Midlakes prepares to host its first-ever all-female wrestling tournament on December 28. The event is set to feature over 200 student-athletes from more than 20 schools. Matches will begin at 9 a.m. and be contested across four mats in the high school and middle school gymnasiums, with finals taking place in the high school gym.
