Despite efforts to protect New York road workers, dangerous incidents continue to occur, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement. The New York State Thruway Authority recently released video footage showing a tractor-trailer striking an attenuator truck in Buffalo. Fortunately, no serious injuries occurred, but other incidents this year have turned fatal, including two worker deaths in May and November.
State officials say the expanded Move Over law, which requires drivers to slow down and shift lanes for any vehicle on the roadside, is still being ignored. Assembly Transportation Committee Chair Bill Magnarelli supports stronger enforcement, including extending the state’s work zone speed camera program.
Thruway Authority officials stress that drivers must share responsibility.
