One of the 13 suspects in the 2023 kidnapping and murder of an Ithaca man is on trial in Tioga County. The prosecution rested its case Tuesday after a day of witness testimony, while the defense called one witness before court adjourned.
Angelo Baez faces murder and kidnapping charges. A New York State Police investigator detailed using Baez’s Google data and phone metadata to track his location during Thomas Rath’s abduction and murder. Rath was kidnapped from an Ithaca homeless encampment on May 20, 2023, and his remains were discovered on August 3 in Candor, NY.
Testimony included forensic analysis showing Rath sustained injuries consistent with gunshot wounds or blunt force trauma. Baez’s trial resumes Wednesday, with the defense expected to call more witnesses before the case goes to the jury.
