Micron and the federal government are close to finalizing a funding agreement for a new chip plant near Syracuse, according to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s office. The deal, tied to the CHIPS and Science Act, is expected to be completed this week.
The agreement secures $6.1 billion in federal funding for the massive chip fabrication facility in Clay, announced by President Joe Biden in April. Schumer expressed confidence in November that the CHIPS Act will remain in place despite upcoming changes in Washington leadership.
Construction is currently delayed due to an endangered bat species on-site. Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon says tree clearing will begin next year.
