Officials have confirmed that the fire in Canandaigua over the weekend was accidental, and on Monday, they identified the victim of the blaze.
Saverio Campagna, 98, was pulled from the fire by first responders, but died from injuries sustained in the blaze.
The fire broke out shortly before 9 a.m., with heavy smoke visible as firefighters arrived.
One individual was trapped inside and rescued but died before reaching the hospital, said Canandaigua Fire Chief Frank Magnera. Two other residents were treated for smoke inhalation and are expected to recover.
The fire was brought under control within two hours, leaving the home uninhabitable. While speaking with RochesterFirst.com Mayor Bob Palumbo called it a ‘devastating’ loss and described the family as vital to the neighborhood and expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
The investigation into the fire’s cause is ongoing. Crews from the Canandaigua, Crystal Beach, and Hopewell Fire Departments responded to the scene.
