Trump, posting on Truth Social, claimed Pardo agreed to halt migration through Mexico, effectively closing the southern U.S. border, while also addressing drug smuggling and U.S. drug consumption.
Pardo, Mexico’s first female president, clarified in a post on X that Mexico’s approach involves aiding migrants and caravans before they reach the border, respecting human rights. She emphasized building “bridges between governments and peoples” over closing borders. Pardo confirmed that migrant caravans are being managed within Mexico and pledged collaboration on security and fentanyl prevention efforts.
Trump also announced plans for a 25% tariff on Mexican imports to combat illegal immigration and drug smuggling, with similar tariffs targeting Canada and China.
