Symptoms often begin like a cold, including a runny nose, mild cough, and low-grade fever, but can escalate to severe coughing fits and breathing difficulties. The disease poses the greatest risk to babies, immunocompromised individuals, and those with asthma.
Health officials stress the importance of staying current on vaccinations, especially for those in close contact with infants. Anyone experiencing severe coughing or breathing trouble should seek medical attention promptly for early antibiotic treatment.
