Walmart warns consumers: Trump’s tariffs mean higher prices for Americans

President-elect Donald Trump’s tariff plan, promising taxes on foreign imports, faces backlash as Walmart finance chief John David Rainey cautions that costs will fall on American consumers. The proposed blanket tariffs, ranging from 10-20% on all imports and up to 60% on Chinese goods, are expected to fuel inflation and raise prices on everyday items.

Trump’s campaign painted tariffs as a solution to reduce the deficit and boost U.S. manufacturing, but experts and retailers like Walmart disagree. The National Retail Federation emphasized that importers, not foreign exporters, pay tariffs, leading to higher consumer prices. Walmart vowed to minimize impacts but admitted, “we’re not immune.”

The proposed policies risk reversing years of cost-cutting from global supply chains, leaving households to bear the economic burden.
