A Cayuga County jury has ruled the Auburn Enlarged City School District is not liable for the sexual abuse of a former student, despite finding it negligent in its supervision of the teacher involved.
The verdict, issued Thursday, determined the district’s negligence was not a substantial factor in the abuse of Pamela Deacon O’Grady by former music teacher Thomas R. Camp during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
O’Grady’s lawsuit, filed under the New York State Child Victims Act, claimed Camp abused her over 600 times before his 1980 resignation and continued afterward. While O’Grady’s separate case against Camp was settled after the trial, terms were not disclosed.
