Bluesky, a rising social media rival to Elon Musk’s X and Meta’s Threads, is designed to give users unparalleled control, making it resistant to takeovers, CEO Jay Graber recently told CNBC.
The platform’s open-source structure allows users to leave with their followers intact, avoiding issues like those seen after Musk’s Twitter acquisition in 2022.
Since the U.S. presidential election, Bluesky’s user base has surged by 7 million, bringing its total to over 21 million.
Graber emphasized the platform’s commitment to transparency, rejecting algorithm-driven ads and focusing on user-centric monetization like subscriptions and developer tools. Bluesky has raised $36 million in funding, including a $15 million round in October, as it positions itself as a radically open alternative to traditional social media.
