Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler will resign on Jan. 20, clearing the way for President-elect Donald Trump to select a new leader for the agency. Gensler, who began his term in 2021, led ambitious reforms but faced criticism, particularly from the cryptocurrency industry.
During his tenure, Gensler prioritized investor protections, accelerated stock trade settlements, and pushed for greater corporate transparency. He also clashed with crypto firms, notably losing a legal battle with Grayscale over bitcoin ETFs. Gensler’s departure was anticipated, despite his term extending to 2026, signaling potential regulatory shifts under Trump’s expected pro-Wall Street pick.
Gensler expressed gratitude for the SEC’s staff, calling them mission-driven public servants dedicated to ensuring America’s capital markets remain robust and fair.
