Once a pioneer in integrated healthcare, the former Newark Medical Center on Church Street is being torn down after years of neglect. Built in 1949, the center was ahead of its time, offering services like radiology, a blood lab, and a small pharmacy under one roof—rare for its era.
The center’s prominence faded after the opening of Newark Wayne Community Hospital in 1957, leaving the building vacant by the late 1970s or 1980s. Attempts to repurpose it failed, and the structure eventually became unsafe.
Demolition began Tuesday, funded by the Wayne County Regional Land Bank.
