A bankruptcy judge is reexamining The Onion’s bid to acquire the assets of Alex Jones’ InfoWars, temporarily pausing the transaction. The winning bid was backed by families of Sandy Hook victims, who agreed to reduce their recovery claims to boost the offer’s appeal. Concerns have arisen about the auction’s transparency due to secret bid submissions.
Jones and his company filed for bankruptcy in 2022 after a $1.4 billion defamation verdict. The Onion’s bid was favored over a higher cash offer because it prioritized other creditors, as revealed in court. Pending approval, The Onion plans to relaunch InfoWars in 2025 as a satirical platform mocking far-right culture.
The sale process is ongoing, with a hearing set for next week to address the disputed auction.
