Beaver Moon: The last supermoon of 2024 shines this weekend

The final supermoon of 2024, known as the Beaver Moon, will illuminate the night sky starting Friday. This “extra special” full Moon will appear brighter and larger than usual, marking the fourth and last supermoon of the year, slightly outshining the first one in August, according to NASA.

The Beaver Moon gets its name from traditions recognizing November as the time beavers prepare for winter or were historically trapped for their warm pelts. Visible from sunset Friday until just before sunrise Sunday, the supermoon will rise in the east and reach peak illumination at 4:29 p.m. EST. Nearby, viewers can spot the Pleiades star cluster.

The next supermoon won’t appear until October 7, 2025. Enjoy this celestial treat before it’s gone!
