The state Department of Environmental Conservation has pushed back its deadline to respond to the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Seneca Meadows Inc.’s proposed landfill expansion in Seneca County.
Initially due Nov. 12, the new deadline is Dec. 12, per an agreement between the DEC and SMI.
The DEC plans to announce a public comment period or hearing once the draft EIS is accepted for review. The landfill’s operator, SMI, seeks to expand by 70 feet, creating 47 acres of new dumping space to continue operations at 6,000 tons daily until 2040.
The town of Seneca Falls, which has yet to take an official stance, recently allocated funds for legal and engineering consultants to assess the proposal.
