Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) will honor local veterans and commemorate the legacy of World War II service members with a special Veterans Day ceremony on Monday, November 11, at noon. The event, held at RG&E’s Scottsville Road facility, will include a dedication for a historic plaque listing RG&E employees who served in WWII, including eight who sacrificed their lives.
“Veterans Day is a special occasion to remember those who selflessly served our country,” said Trish Nilsen, president and CEO of RG&E and NYSEG. “Veterans are an essential part of our workforce, and it’s an honor to work alongside them.”
The plaque, now relocated to a prominent place on the Scottsville Road campus, was moved through the efforts of AVAN-Veterans, RG&E’s business resource group supporting veterans, their families, and allies. The ceremony will also feature the raising of the POW/MIA flag, which will fly for the remainder of the month.
Highlighting the ceremony will be a tribute to 99-year-old George Becker, an RG&E retiree and New York State Veterans Hall of Fame inductee. A Navy veteran, Becker served as an Electrician’s Mate Second Class during WWII aboard the USS Emery, a destroyer escort operating in the South Pacific. His service earned him the WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. After his military service, Becker dedicated 41 years to RG&E, retiring as manager of Energy Dispatch.
The event will be attended by Becker’s family and local and state leaders, with the public and media invited to join in recognizing RG&E veterans and their enduring contributions to the community.
