Ontario County supervisors to vote on landfill’s future in December

Ontario County’s Board of Supervisors is set to vote on Dec. 5 on whether to close or extend operations at the Ontario County Landfill beyond its 2028 lease expiration.

At a recent meeting, members discussed concerns including environmental impacts, long-haul waste transport, and financial implications if the landfill closes.

Board members are divided, with some supporting closure to protect the environment, while others see revenue benefits in extending operations. The board’s environmental committee will meet Nov. 25 to review a draft resolution, which could lead to a formal board vote.

If the landfill closes, alternatives like a transfer station or limited operation are under consideration, but the county would lose significant income tied to its waste disposal contract.
