Health officials in Tompkins County report a sharp increase in local cases of whooping cough and walking pneumonia. From January to October 2024, there have been 13 whooping cough cases, compared to zero in 2023. Most of these cases are confirmed, with others deemed probable based on symptoms. Whooping cough, a highly contagious bacterial infection, starts with mild symptoms but can lead to severe, prolonged coughing.
Tompkins County Whole Health advises early antibiotic treatment for whooping cough and stresses that vaccination is the best defense. Vaccines like DTaP for young children and Tdap for preteens are essential to reduce infection severity and prevent spread. Meanwhile, walking pneumonia, which lacks a vaccine, has spiked nationwide, especially among children, and is common in crowded living spaces.
