With dry, windy weather intensifying across New York, the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is urging residents to avoid open burning, particularly in regions like the Upper Hudson/Champlain and Hudson Valley. The entire state remains under “High” fire danger conditions, where even small fires risk rapidly spreading into uncontrolled wildfires.
DEC officials advise New Yorkers to limit any outdoor fires. For those who must burn, the agency recommends using a contained fire pit and clearing flammable materials within a three-foot radius around it. Fires should be kept small and attended until they are fully extinguished and cold.
The DEC also reminded residents that burning garbage or leaves is illegal statewide year-round. The latest fire danger map and additional guidance can be found on the DEC’s website.
