The Finger Lakes Community College men’s soccer team made history by clinching their first-ever NJCAA Division III National Tournament spot with a 4-3 win over No. 3 Herkimer in the Region III, District B Championship. In a game filled with drama, the Lakers halted Herkimer’s 19-year championship streak, signaling a new era for FLCC soccer.
The Lakers struck early, with Ben Domann scoring in the 18th minute off an assist from Robin Giesing, who would go on to assist two more goals. Daniel Ojedayo extended the lead to 2-0 by the 30th minute before Herkimer closed the gap with a goal just before halftime. In the second half, goals by Carlos Aguiar and Joao Antonio Rocha countered Herkimer’s attempts to come back.
Giesing, who earned the District B All-Tournament MVP, was among several Lakers named to the All-Region and All-Tournament teams. With their inaugural Region III Championship, FLCC moves forward with a 15-3-3 record to the NJCAA Division III National Tournament on November 12 at Genesee Community College.
