The Saunders Foundation has committed $30 million to the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) in a transformative gift that will significantly enhance research, clinical care, and education in both orthopaedics and nursing. The contribution, led by University Trustee Emeritus E. Philip Saunders, marks the largest gift ever made to the Department of Orthopaedics in its 50-year history.
Of the total, $25 million will fund the UR Medicine Orthopaedics & Physical Performance Center, located at 10 Miracle Mile Drive. In recognition of Saunders’ long-standing support, the facility will be renamed the Saunders Center for Orthopaedics & Physical Performance. The center is noted as the most comprehensive orthopaedic facility in the northeastern United States.
The remaining $5 million will establish a new endowed professorship in orthopaedics at the School of Medicine and Dentistry and provide scholarships for nursing students at the University of Rochester’s School of Nursing.
This contribution will bolster the department’s clinical and research programs, while the new nursing scholarships aim to address the growing need for healthcare professionals.
