Odessa fire district proposal fails; hearing canceled

The planned formation of a Fire District for Odessa has been scrapped, according to officials, who announced Sunday that the proposal had failed.

As a result, a hearing scheduled for Oct. 16 has been canceled. Officials explained that towns including Catharine, Montour, Cayuta, Hector, and Veteran will continue to rely on contracts for fire protection services from Odessa Hose and Fire Company.

Odessa Mayor Gerry Messmer previously emphasized that forming the district was crucial for the village’s survival, as managing the fire department had become too costly for the village to sustain.
