Syracuse University and Cornell University are among 40 schools named in a class-action lawsuit accusing them of price-fixing by raising tuition costs for students from divorced or separated families. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois on Monday, targeting several prominent institutions for unfair financial practices.
The lawsuit claims these universities, including the University of Rochester and New York University, required noncustodial parents to submit financial information, inflating tuition costs for those applying for non-federal financial aid. The College Board, a nonprofit known for its role in college admissions, is also listed as a defendant.
Both Syracuse and Cornell declined to comment on the pending litigation. The law firm representing the plaintiffs alleges that this strategy disproportionately affected families already dealing with financial complexities due to separation.
