Developers are seeking an $85 million tax break to transform Ithaca’s long-vacant 95-acre former industrial site into a neighborhood development known as SouthWorks.
The project, estimated to cost $588 million and take over 30 years to complete, would include hundreds of housing units, retail space, and commercial areas.
While proponents see the project as a major investment in Tompkins County’s future, critics argue the tax breaks are excessive and could ultimately be larger than projected since the development will be built gradually.
The Tompkins County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) is expected to vote on the proposal at its next meeting on Oct. 9, following a public hearing.
