House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated on Thursday that New York City Mayor Eric Adams should not resign despite facing charges of illegal foreign contributions, wire fraud, and bribery. Jeffries emphasized that Adams is “entitled to the presumption of innocence” and should be allowed to face a trial.
Jeffries, the top House Democrat, acknowledged the seriousness of the charges but stressed that the mayor must present a clear plan for New Yorkers moving forward. “It’s important for the mayor to articulate a compelling path to ensure New York continues to function,” Jeffries told NBC News.
While some New York Democrats, including Rep. Jerry Nadler, have called for Adams to step down, Jeffries is opting to let the legal process play out before making any further judgments.
