After four years, Ithaca-Tompkins International Airport’s customs facility will close due to financial losses and low usage.
The Ithaca Voice reports that the Tompkins County Legislature voted 13-1 for closure, with Mike Lane dissenting.
In 2023, the facility lost $258,000 while servicing 26 flights that generated just over $15,000.
Legislators stressed the decision refocuses on urgent priorities, not a lack of confidence in the airport. The facility was part of a $24.7 million renovation funded by a $14 million grant, which allows repurposing if it serves the public.
Closing the facility means international flights must clear customs elsewhere before arriving in Ithaca.
