The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office has announced the creation of a new initiative aimed at preventing targeted acts of violence in the community. The Ontario County Threat Assessment Committee will bring together local law enforcement, government officials, school district representatives, and business leaders to identify and mitigate potential threats before they escalate.
Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione emphasized the importance of this collaborative approach in the face of rising incidents of targeted violence, such as the 2022 Buffalo supermarket shooting and the recent attack at Apalachee High School in Georgia. “The formation of OCTAC represents Ontario County’s commitment to taking preventive measures against the kind of tragic events we’ve seen too often around the country,” said Cirencione. “By bringing together law enforcement, schools, businesses, government agencies, and citizens, we’re creating a coordinated approach to identify threats early and intervene before violence occurs.”
The committee will focus on prevention through community outreach and the training of individuals in organizations who can recognize and report concerning behavior. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity using the Ontario County Sheriff’s app, which provides a direct link to OCTAC’s reporting platform, allowing citizens to send tips to law enforcement in real-time.
The app is available on all major platforms, making it easier for the public to participate in efforts to enhance community safety.
