The Town of Canandaigua has unveiled its tentative budget for 2025, proposing a $9.43 million financial plan that includes investments in parks, infrastructure, and public services. The budget represents an increase from 2024’s approved budget of $7.62 million.
One of the highlights of the proposed budget is the town’s continued commitment to parks and recreation. The 2025 budget allocates over $311,000 toward park maintenance and improvements, along with an additional $150,000 for new recreational facilities. These investments follow a growing demand for well-maintained parks and enhanced community spaces.
The budget also sets aside nearly $255,000 for buildings and equipment upgrades, with particular emphasis on improving town-owned properties. This is in line with efforts to enhance public facilities and maintain infrastructure.
Revenue sources and tax stability
Despite the increase in spending, the budget aims to keep property taxes stable. The town expects to raise $544,873 from real property taxes, slightly down from 2024’s $575,000. However, the bulk of revenue will come from non-property sales tax, with $2.88 million projected—making it the largest revenue source. Other income streams include cable franchise fees, park and recreation fees, and fines.
To cover additional costs, the budget proposes appropriating $1.95 million from the town’s fund balance. The town also expects $275,000 from mortgage tax revenue and $150,000 from interfund transfers to help finance various projects.
Public services and administration
Public safety and administration remain a key focus, with $62,500 allocated for personnel in the Highway Department and $113,300 for zoning officer services. Additionally, $30,000 is earmarked for dog control services, a consistent figure from last year’s budget, reflecting the town’s ongoing commitment to managing community needs.
Town administration costs, including the salaries of elected officials and staff, account for a substantial portion of the budget. Notably, the salaries for the town supervisor, justices, and board members are included, with the supervisor’s office budgeted at over $68,000.
