The Cayuga County Legislature is set to convene tonight at the Sterling Nature Center, where lawmakers will address key issues, including changes to the county’s financial leadership and new public health initiatives aimed at curbing drug overdoses.
A significant item on the agenda is the proposed amendment to a 2021 local law, which would establish a Department of Finance and create the position of Director of Finance, replacing the current Office of Finance Director. If approved, this restructuring is intended to modernize the county’s financial management and improve coordination across departments. Legislators are also expected to appoint Grace Blowers as the new Director of Finance, with a proposed annual salary of $107,705, effective October 1.
In addition to the financial overhaul, the Legislature will consider several resolutions aimed at enhancing public health services in Cayuga County. One notable resolution involves accepting a two-and-a-half-year, $499,638 grant from the New York State Department of Health to address rising drug overdose cases. The funds will support the county’s “Keeping People Alive” program, which expands harm reduction services and peer-delivered support for individuals at risk of overdose. The program will also provide resources at the Health Hub, a safe space offering supplies, advocacy, and access to treatment.
The Legislature will also discuss an amendment to a previous resolution, allowing for expanded harm reduction services under another New York State Department of Health grant totaling $596,740. This grant is aimed at supporting the county’s Homeless Outreach and Peer Engagement (HOPE) program, which focuses on street outreach for individuals with substance use disorders, particularly those experiencing homelessness.
Other agenda items include resolutions to approve youth employment funding, authorize re-housing services for vulnerable populations, and appoint staff for key health and human services positions.
The meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. can be streamed live above.
