Residents near Seneca and Cayuga Lakes are urged to exercise caution as harmful algal blooms (HABs), commonly known as blue-green algae, have become widespread across the Finger Lakes. The Seneca County Health Department reports that these blooms, fueled by recent warm temperatures and low winds, pose health risks to humans and animals through skin contact or ingestion.
Symptoms from exposure can include skin irritation, respiratory issues, headaches, nausea, or vomiting. Pets are at even greater risk, potentially facing severe complications or death. Officials advise avoiding contact with discolored or scummy water and recommend rinsing immediately with fresh water if exposure occurs. Boaters and kayakers should thoroughly clean their vessels after potential exposure.
To stay safe, residents should recognize the signs of HABs—such as strongly colored water or a paint-like appearance—avoid affected areas, and report any blooms to the New York State online HABs reporting system. More information is available on the Seneca County Health Department’s website.
