The Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association celebrated the efforts of its outstanding volunteers during its 2024 Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition event, held on September 12 at Climbing Bines in Penn Yan, NY. The event highlighted the exceptional contributions of individuals and organizations whose work has significantly impacted the health and preservation of Seneca Lake.
Shannon Hazlitt Harts received the Mary Rose Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award for her leadership and dedication since joining the organization in 2020. As Chair of the Communications Committee, Harts has elevated the association’s messaging, helping to unify its outreach through newsletters, social media, and public relations efforts.
The Rich Adams Memorial President’s Award was presented to Jacob Welch, former president of the organization, for his role in creating the Sediment, Nutrient, and Pollution Reduction program. Welch’s leadership extended beyond local efforts, influencing regional projects as President of the Finger Lakes Regional Watershed Alliance.
The Schuyler County Soil and Water Conservation District, led by Jerry Verrigni, earned the Howard H. Kimball Memorial Founder’s Award for its commitment to safeguarding the Seneca Lake watershed. Their work in erosion control and sustainable agriculture has reduced nutrient runoff, contributing to the lake’s long-term health.
