The Ithaca Fire Department will soon replace its aging rescue boat used for water rescues on Cayuga Lake, thanks to a $250,000 state grant. Officials told The Ithaca Voice that the funds will cover about half the cost of a new boat, with the City of Ithaca covering the remaining expense.
The current boat, a retrofitted recreational vessel, has experienced frequent issues, prompting the need for an upgrade. The new boat will be designed specifically for rescue operations and include a high-pressure water pump to assist in firefighting.
Local officials, including State Senator Lea Webb, celebrated the funding as essential for maintaining safety on the lake.
