Emergency medical services across New York are set to benefit from a new law signed by Governor Kathy Hochul, allowing EMS providers to be reimbursed for treating patients in place or transporting them to non-hospital facilities.
Advocates pushed for the bill’s passage before Sept. 30 to ensure EMS agencies could access these reimbursements starting Oct. 1.
Steven Kroll, legislative chair for the New York State Volunteer Ambulance and Rescue Association, praised the law, saying it gives EMS clinicians more flexibility in providing care.
The law also allows transport to urgent care or substance use treatment centers, helping to reduce hospital overcrowding.
