The Cayuga County Health Department is reminding residents with lakefront property on the Finger Lakes to avoid using untreated lake water in their homes. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the lakes can produce toxins that cannot be removed through common in-home treatment methods like boiling, chlorine disinfection, ultraviolet radiation, or water filtration systems.
The department advises never to drink or use untreated lake water, even if HABs are not visibly present. This precaution extends to making infant formula, brushing teeth, and preparing food. For those on public water supplies, drinking water is regulated and treated to ensure safety.
