As fall activities kick off, the Cayuga County Health Department is reminding residents that summer temperatures are keeping harmful algal blooms (HABs) active across the region, including Cayuga County and the rest of the Finger Lakes. HABs, which can be dangerous to both people and animals, have been reported on Owasco Lake as recently as September 13.
Health officials urge residents to stay clear of discolored water or areas with floating mats or scum, as contact with HABs can result in negative health effects. People, pets, and livestock should avoid swimming, fishing, or wading in potentially contaminated water. The department advises, “When in doubt, stay out!”
HABs were also confirmed along the Cayuga-Seneca Canal in Seneca Falls and Waterloo this past week with photos showing concentrations of blooms near downtown.
