Gerrit Cole’s decision to intentionally walk Rafael Devers with no runners on base triggered a three-run fourth inning for Boston, and Devers later added a two-run single in the fifth as the New York Yankees (86-63) fell 7-1 to the Red Sox (75-74) on Saturday afternoon at Yanke Stadium.
Cole, last year’s AL Cy Young Award winner, was pitching a no-hitter and leading 1-0 when he walked Devers in the fourth. Before that, Devers had been the only Red Sox player to reach base after being hit by a pitch in the first. Cole had retired nine of the first 10 batters but then allowed 10 of the next 12 to reach base. He exited after 4 1/3 innings, having given up seven runs, his worst outing since June 2022.
Boston starter Brayan Bello allowed just one run over 5 1/3 innings.
Devers, who has had past success against Cole, stole second base after his intentional walk, setting up Masataka Yoshida’s RBI double to tie the game. Boston’s offense erupted from there, with Wilyer Abreu and Triston Casas contributing to the lead.
Gleyber Torres drove in New York’s lone run in the third with a single.
The Yankees will send Carlos Rodón to the mound on Sunday as they look to bounce back and take three of four in the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
