The U.S. Postal Service’s new delivery trucks, the Next Generation Delivery Vehicles, have begun rolling out in Athens, Georgia, and are receiving high praise from postal workers despite their unconventional appearance. Designed for comfort and safety, the new trucks are a significant upgrade from the decades-old Grumman Long Life Vehicles. Featuring air conditioning, 360-degree cameras, and larger package storage, carriers are thrilled with the improvements.
Built by Oshkosh Defense, the new trucks are part of a larger USPS transformation, aiming to replace the aging fleet with 60,000 vehicles, most of them electric. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy emphasized that the changes, including electrification, will help the agency cut carbon emissions by 40% by 2030.
The journey wasn’t without challenges, as environmentalists initially criticized the focus on gas-powered vehicles. However, a $3 billion government investment has helped increase the number of electric trucks, marking a pivotal step toward the Postal Service’s sustainability goals.
