Researchers at the College of Veterinary Medicine have uncovered the first genetic evidence of feline coronavirus (FCoV) transmission between a captive wild cat and a domestic cat. The groundbreaking discovery was made through hybridization-capture next-generation genetic sequencing and sheds new light on the potential spread and impact of this virus, especially its more dangerous form, feline infectious peritonitis (FIP).
Led by Gary Whittaker, James Law Professor of Virology, and Ximena Olarte Castillo, the study found that both a domestic cat and a Pallas’ cat at a U.S. zoo, which shared the same space in 2008, died from FIP caused by FCoV-1. The research emphasizes the susceptibility of wild felids to the virus, which is commonly found in domestic cats.
“By utilizing cutting-edge sequencing technology, we’ve opened new possibilities for understanding and responding to FCoV outbreaks,” said Whittaker.
The study not only highlights the risk of FCoV transmission but also paves the way for improved surveillance and response to emerging diseases in both domestic and wild feline species.
