A sergeant at the Auburn Correctional Facility was knocked unconscious by an inmate during an altercation on September 4, according to the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA). The incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. when an inmate attacked the officer from behind, causing her to strike a metal fence post.
Following the assault, officers apprehended the inmate while another inmate approached the unconscious sergeant. Officers used chemical agents to subdue him after he ignored orders to back away. In the infirmary, the second inmate head-butted an officer and was found with a metal rod in his sock.
The injured sergeant regained consciousness and was treated for a concussion and fractured elbow at Upstate Hospital. The inmate responsible for the attack has been transferred to Attica Correctional Facility.
