Governor Kathy Hochul announced the designation of Lake Ontario as a National Marine Sanctuary, marking it as the 16th site in the National Marine Sanctuary System and the first in New York State. The sanctuary spans over 1,700 square miles of state waters and safeguards 43 known shipwrecks and one submerged aircraft, showcasing centuries of maritime history.
Governor Hochul praised the sanctuary’s role in highlighting the unique maritime heritage of upstate communities while promoting research and recreation. The designation was celebrated by NOAA Administrator Richard Spinrad, who emphasized Lake Ontario’s significance as a gateway between the Great Lakes and the ocean.
The Lake Ontario sanctuary will foster educational and recreational opportunities while protecting important cultural and natural resources without restricting activities like fishing or boating.
